A Closer look into PYP

A Balanced Curriculum for Lifelong Learners

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) at AIA blends the NSW Curriculum with the global standards of the IB framework, giving students a rich, well-rounded education anchored in Islamic values.

We focus on developing the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually—through both integrated inquiry units and focused subject learning.

What Do Students Learn?

The PYP is structured around six transdisciplinary themes that guide learning across all learning areas. These themes help students explore big ideas that matter across cultures and disciplines:

Islamic Ethos Throughout

Our curriculum is enriched by Islamic teachings and character education, fostering students who not only excel academically but also demonstrate compassion, humility, and responsibility.

Core Learning Areas

Our Kindergarten to Year 6 students engage in a well-rounded curriculum that includes:

  • English & Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology
  • History and Geography (HSIE)
  • Creative Arts – Music, drama, dance, and visual arts
  • Health & Physical Education (PDHPE)
  • Arabic Language
  • Islamic Studies
  • Library

Wherever possible, specialist subjects are integrated into each Unit of Inquiry. When a subject’s specific knowledge or skills do not authentically align with the UOI, they are taught as stand-alone lessons—ensuring all syllabus outcomes are met without compromising inquiry integrity.

In Kindergarten to Year 2, students also participate in the Initialit Literacy Program, with targeted support through MiniLit.

Approaches to Learning

Students develop essential skills through five key Approaches to Learning (ATL):

PYP Exhibition – Year 6

In their final year of the PYP, all Year 6 students participate in the PYP Exhibition—a powerful, student-led inquiry that showcases their growth as learners and citizens.

Students work collaboratively to:

  • Investigate a global or community issue
  • Apply their learning across multiple subjects
  • Present findings creatively to peers, parents, and staff
  • Reflect on their identity, responsibility, and contribution to the world

The Exhibition is a culmination of everything they’ve learned in the PYP—and a proud celebration of their readiness to transition to the MYP.

Transitioning to High School: The MYP Journey Begins

As students complete Year 6, they transition from the PYP into the Middle Years Programme (MYP)—the next stage in the IB continuum. This shift is supported through leadership opportunities, digital integration, and growing academic independence.
